What Is IFS Therapy?
Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a compassionate, evidence-based approach to psychotherapy that helps people heal by understanding and transforming their inner emotional world. Developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz, IFS is based on the idea that our mind is made up of different “parts” — like an internal family — each with its own voice, emotion, and perspective.
You might recognize this in your own experience:
“Part of me wants to move on, but another part feels stuck.”
IFS helps you gently explore and heal those internal conflicts.
The Core of IFS: The Self
At the heart of IFS is the belief that every person has a core Self — a calm, curious, and compassionate inner leader. When we connect with our Self, we can understand and guide the parts of us that carry pain, fear, or protective energy.
IFS isn’t about “getting rid of” parts. It’s about listening to them, understanding their roles, and helping them heal and find balance.
The Three Types of Parts
IFS identifies three main roles that parts tend to play:
🔹 Exiles
These are the vulnerable parts that carry past wounds, trauma, shame, or fear. They’re often pushed away or hidden because they hold intense emotional pain.
🔹 Managers
Managers are protective parts that try to control your environment or behavior to avoid triggering the exiles. They may show up as perfectionism, overthinking, people-pleasing, or self-criticism.
🔹 Firefighters
When exiles are activated, firefighters jump in to quickly numb or distract from emotional pain. They may use impulsive or addictive behaviors — like overeating, substance use, or avoidance — to keep the system from feeling overwhelmed.
What Happens in IFS Therapy?
In IFS therapy, you’ll:
-
Learn to identify and listen to your parts without judgment
-
Develop a relationship with your Self, the natural leader inside you
-
Help protective parts relax and step back
-
Heal past wounds by giving your exiled parts the care and attention they need
-
Move toward greater inner harmony and self-compassion
IFS is gentle yet deeply transformative. It empowers you to become more connected, calm, and whole — not by silencing parts of yourself, but by bringing all of them into relationship with your Self.
